Bachelor of Science (BS), Mathematics: Pure Mathematics

Program Overview

The Mathematics: Pure Mathematics concentration provides you with opportunities to delve into both the theoretical and practical experiences necessary to understand life with numbers. Our coursework in algebra, analysis, and statistics have helped prepare our alumni for graduate study in mathematics, statistics, environmental engineering, and data analytics. The breadth of study in the degree provides you with the opportunity to gain the skills to apply mathematical reasoning and techniques to solve real-world problems related to engineering, finance, and economics. Our Pure Mathematics concentration empowers you to engage, explain, and employ cutting-edge technologies in an ever-changing economy. The Pure Mathematics concentration exposes you to the beauty of pure mathematics through multiple semesters of proof-based courses, such as Abstract Algebra and Advanced Calculus. You will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge to solve important practical problems through calculus-based models and statistics. You will also acquire practical programming skills through computer science and coding courses. Our program not only seeks to produce competent mathematicians, but men and women prepared to engage, challenge, and build upon the religious, scientific, and philosophical ideas of a constantly changing world.

Tradition has it that above the door of Plato’s Academy was engraved the warning “Let no man ignorant of Geometry enter here.” The clarity of thought demanded by Plato is intimately linked to mathematics. As such, we believe that mathematics is not just a means to a fulfilling and lucrative career, but an essential part of a liberal arts education. The Pure Mathematics concentration allows students to encounter the beauty of pure mathematics through multiple semesters of proof-based courses such as Abstract Algebra and Advanced Calculus and to apply their knowledge to solve important practical problems through calculus-based models and statistics. Students also acquire practical programming skills through courses in computer science and coding in statistics courses. The mathematics major at AU not only produces competent mathematicians, but men and women prepared to engage, challenge, and build upon the religious, scientific, and philosophical ideas of a constantly changing digital world.
