AU has a distinguished record of undergraduate cancer research. Students have had the opportunity to work with the Oncology Research Institute of the Greenville Hospital System. In addition, AU students have been successful in winning South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Research Grants.
Student Research Projects
- Students can grow and experiment upon human cancer cell lines using the tissue culture equipment at the A U-CCR.
- In 2012, Meaghan Standridge and Tori Bower won the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities research grant entitled “Modeling BRCA1 Gene Mutations using variations of the Jukes-Cantor Method”. BRCA1 is a human gene associated with increased risk of breast and/or ovarian cancer.
- Current research projects involve the effect of fruit-extracts and medicinal herbs as anti-proliferation agents in cancer cells.
- During the 2011-2012 academic year, students were involved in a Livestrong grant to educate local health care professionals in the treatments and approaches to best serve local Latino cancer patients.
- In 2008 and 2009, students worked with the Oncology Research Institute of the Greenville Hospital System.
