Coding and App Development Minor

Developed in collaboration with Apple to give you the knowledge and skill required for careers in software development and information technology, the Coding and App Development Minor will teach students the principles of coding and app design and development using the Swift programming language and the Xcode software development tool. Students from any major will develop knowledge and skills critical for jobs in software development and information technology.

The minor covers the basics of coding, design, and product development.

The Coding and App Development minor totals 18 credits and has no prerequisite courses to get started. It will provide you with the principles of coding and app design and development using Swift (the language of choice for iOS) and Xcode (a suite of app development tools).

Your classes will be delivered through the College of Arts and Science, College of Business and South Carolina School of the Arts. All the content is free and provided through Apple’s App Development with Swift curriculum. In the minor’s capstone experience, students work collaboratively to produce their own app that addresses a real-world need, challenge, or problem.

While pursuing this minor, you’ll not only learn to code, but you’ll acquire a skill set that will serve you well in any environment. Throughout the curriculum, you’ll study:

  • Foundations of code and logic that will help you create your own code
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills that equip you to address real-world solutions
  • Human-centered design – how humans interact with technology (crucial for app development)
  • Collaboration and teamwork – you’ll serve with fellow students on a software-development team, working together to design an app for a client
  • Christ-centered values

Students in the Coding and App Development minor will be challenged to design apps that promote the ethical use of technology that values the human experience, demonstrates social responsibility, and reflects our humanity. AU’s Christ-centered values will provide you with a sturdy, culturally relevant basis upon which to build your body of tech knowledge.
