Behind the Publication

About the Design

By: Grayson Kirkland Miller
Anderson University Magazine Creative Director

When we began planning this edition of the magazine, there was a feeling of excitement in the air–a desire to completely rethink everything we knew about creating this publication. From conceptualization of theming to how we communicated as a team, and most importantly how we approached the magazine’s visual design, we were determined to start with a fresh perspective. The core team– Executive Editor Andrew Beckner, Photography Lead Westin Edwards, Production Director Nicole Matney and myself as Creative Director–came together with a shared vision to redefine what this publication could be. We set aside old assumptions and embraced a bold new direction.

With a team composed largely of fresh faces, we were able to ideate freely and in new ways that would only elevate a publication that that been produced for decades. While it is one thing to update Anderson University friends and family on what’s happened since the last edition, it’s entirely different to craft a compelling narrative that showcases the profound impact we, as a University, have made on the world around us. Our goal was not to just inform, but to invite readers to join in these endeavors, making them feel a part of our ongoing journey.

With the theme of “From Dark to Light” in place, I collaborated closely with Westin to develop shot lists that would visually reflect this concept throughout the articles. Even with that careful planning, each subject brought their own unique surprised, adding an exciting layer of unpredictability to the process. What truly stands out, however, is how effortlessly Westin adapted in the moment, capturing breathtaking photography that perfectly complements our vision. His ability to pivot and create such stunning visuals is one of the key reasons we feel such a sense of accomplishment in seeing this edition come to life.

The bulk of my work begins once I have the core assets for the articles. I take time to thoroughly review the articles that Andrew and his talented team of writers have crafted. This served as the foundation for my creative process, guiding how I selected and positioned visuals. Throughout this stage, my guiding principle was simple, “How can I visually tell this story at a glance?” While it’s essential for readers to dive into the articles themselves, I firmly believe that first impressions matter. People do judge books by their covers, and my goal is to captivate them immediately, drawing them into the story from the very first moment they see it.

This edition has been an absolute joy to assemble, thanks to the incredible team of talented individuals involved. From initial concept to final execution, I truly believe–though I may be a bit biased–that this is our best one yet.
