College of Education

Bachelor of Science (BS), Physical Education

Program Overview

The Physical Education program will give you the skills to teach and guide a diverse student population in the classroom. As an educator, you must be prepared to help students understand how physical activity can improve their lives. In this program, you’ll study kinesiology, exercise science, physical science, and educational pedagogy. You’ll be prepared to mentor and develop students who pursue higher education, as well as those entering the workforce after high school. Our close connections with private and public schools will help you network with educators and open a path for you to step into any classroom.

In the Physical Education program, you will complete course work in educational pedagogy, kinesiology, methods for teaching PE, and embedded clinicals in addition to your core classes. Your curriculum will be a balance of building your content area knowledge and learning the foundational educational theories to build your teaching expertise.

Your degree will equip you to earn your teaching certification for the state of South Carolina for all grade levels P-12. Current state regulations allow to utilize this certification for teaching positions in elementary, middle, or high school settings. Certified Physical Education teachers are in high demand and your certification will be recognized in many other states. Some of our graduates have gone on to explore other careers in coaching, personal fitness training, sports management, and athletic directing. AU receives calls each semester from administrators requesting our College of Education graduates who are well known for their professionalism, competence, and desire to shape South Carolina’s students by the time they graduate from our program.

AU has joined Common App, a powerful online college application platform, to help streamline the application process!
