Bachelor of Arts (BA), English: Writing and Digital Studies

Program Overview

The English: Writing and Digital Studies concentration seeks to teach you the competencies to communicate effectively across multiple media platforms to sophisticated audiences. You’ll take courses such as Business Communications, Visual Multimedia Design, and Techniques of Persuasive Writing. We will equip you with the knowledge needed to combine writing, images, and video to inspire action from your audience. Your coursework focuses on a broad range of communication techniques so you can graduate equipped with the skills to be a producer, author, communication specialist, journalist, social media manager, or video editor. This concentration also serves as an excellent double major, allowing you to elevate the way you communicate within an organization and with the public.

To write for today’s visually-driven audiences, adding visual and multimedia design to your arsenal will be beneficial. Our Visual and Multimedia Design course shows you how you can address public issues through design-based visual communication by teaching you how to combine the written word, powerful images, and compelling videos to spur people to action. The Techniques and Persuasive Writing course spans the complexities of presenting information. Your professor may ask you to create a client project that includes multiple forms of communication: writing, images, and video. This project can include essential messaging, user experience assessment, and campaign revision to achieve effective user-centered design.

English students gain a wealth of knowledge about writing, design, literary traditions, genres, and critical theory, but, more importantly, English students become even more adept at asking questions and applying their rich skill sets. English graduates are proficient and creative thinkers. Their abilities—including advanced literacy, written and oral communication, ability to construct a persuasive and logical argument, research acumen, and audience awareness—are assets in any profession.

If you love reading and writing, consider an English major. You will earn an incredibly versatile and marketable degree, and employers will value your strong written and oral communication skills. While advances in technology and AI are rendering many disciplines obsolete, English graduates distinguish themselves through their creative thinking, problem-solving, and capacity for empathy. English graduates are ready for careers that society has not yet imagined.

The English Department collaborates with the Center for Career Development to help students secure internships and learn of career opportunities. The department also hosts alumni events to help current students network and hear advice from recent alumni.
