Department of Modern Languages & Cultures

To live in a global society requires an immersion into culture and with that immersion comes the joy of learning languages. Spanish continues to be one of the top-three-studied languages in the world and is the second-most frequently spoken language in the United States.

At AU, the one-on-one attention you receive from your professors will prepare you to enter the professional world with the linguistic and cultural training you need to communicate effectively, build relationships and augment your awareness of cultural nuances.

Department Majors

The Spanish program will transform you into a global citizen. You’ll gain the skills to communicate cross-culturally and analyze Hispanic literature. You’ll have the opportunity to go on an immersive study abroad trip, join the Spanish Club, and be part of the Spanish honor society (Sigma Delta Pi).

Department Minors

The 18-credit Spanish minor covers two intermediate Spanish courses, advanced composition and conversation as well as three upper-level courses from the Spanish program that cover multiple aspects of history and culture.

Latin American Studies

In this 18-credit minor, you’ll take three Spanish language and culture courses and a mix of three upper-level ones, including courses on history, business leadership, Spanish Cinema & Cultural Integration, Spanish literature and Spanish civilization.
