Bachelor of Science (BS), Mathematics: Actuarial

Program Overview

The Mathematics: Actuarial concentration is a recognized actuarial program by the Society of Actuaries. Through the degree program, students are prepared for entrance into the actuarial profession through engaging coursework in Probability, Statistics, and Mathematical Finance. Actuaries evaluate and quantify risk for companies and people to make educated decisions for an unknown future. Admission into the actuarial profession is dependent upon completion of a series of examinations. Classes in the Actuarial Science concentration prepare students for the initial exams offered by the Society of Actuaries. In addition to mathematics courses, students acquire accounting, finance, and economics skills through classes offered by the College of Business. Graduates from our program have gone on to work as both in-house actuaries and as actuarial consultants. Students in the program have also earned paid internships in the profession in both local and international companies.

Admission into the actuarial profession is conditional upon completion of actuarial exams offered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS). The Mathematics: Actuarial concentration at AU is recognized by the SOA as preparing students for the initial two exams required by both professional bodies (P/1 and FM/2). Through small classes taught by faculty who well acquainted with these exams, graduates of the program will be well prepared to begin their careers as actuaries. Additionally, data analytics and statistics courses at AU give students the necessary skills to prepare for the SRM exam offered by the SOA. Beyond the actuarial field, students in the Actuarial concentration take mathematics classes that will prepare them for quantitative careers outside the actuarial profession such as data analytics and finance.
