College of Arts and Sciences

Bachelor of Science (BS), Mathematics: Actuarial

Program Overview

The Mathematics: Actuarial Science concentration prepares you for entrance into the actuarial profession through engaging coursework in probability, statistics, and mathematical finance. Actuaries evaluate and quantify risk for companies and people to make educated decisions for an unknown future. Admission into the actuarial profession is dependent upon completion of a series of examinations. Classes in the Actuarial Science concentration prepare you for the initial exams offered by the Society of Actuaries. In addition to mathematics courses, you will acquire accounting, finance, and economics skills through classes offered by the College of Business. Graduates from our program have gone on to work as both in-house actuaries and as actuarial consultants. Students in the program have also earned paid internships in the profession in both local companies and in international companies such as AIG. This program is a recognized actuarial program by the Society of Actuaries.

Your career outlook is strong with a Mathematics: Actuarial degree from Anderson University. You can help with an individual’s car insurance or determine pension plans for a Fortune 500 company. Demand for actuaries is high. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field is expected to grow by 18% in the next decade. You earn a great starting salary and have the potential to
double your salary in the first five years of your career. With each level of certification, your earning potential grows. If assessing risk for insurance companies is not your ideal career path, there are several opportunities you can explore with your actuary degree from AU.
