“The student as a treasure hunter starts a voyage down a confusing and bumpy path in academe, one that is unpredictable, with you the student seeker finding yourself not knowing where to turn next. There hidden in plain sight, the seeker finds the hidden gem.”
The “gem,” according to Dr. Dawn Harbin, is Kay Maynard.
Harbin, a 2007 graduate of Anderson University, currently serves as a clinical psychologist with The Carolina Center For Behavioral Health. As an adult learner coming to Anderson University through the Accel program, Harbin visited the Thrift Library where Maynard, a member of the library staff, gave her more than just information.
“I not only received a walkthrough of the library but also some sound advice on the adult learner suddenly immersed in the world of academia on a campus that is mainly young people,” said Harbin, adding that Maynard’s wise advice to persevere stands out in her memory: “Even though you’re an adult student, you have it in you to complete the degree and make yourself a better life. I am here often and will help you in any way I can.”
As Harbin worked on her baccalaureate and graduate degrees at Anderson University and went on to pursue her Ph.D., Maynard kept in touch with Harbin, consistently encouraging her as she progressed through her studies.
“At the start of my education at Anderson University, I knew the library and librarians would be my best friends. I have a lifelong obsession with books and continuing my education. However, I didn’t know it would result in a lifelong relationship that continues to this day,” said Harbin. “Kay Maynard is an undiscovered gem that all students should have some involvement with in order to not only complete their education but to enrich their lives with her kindness and wisdom.”
