Course Title:  Peru Musical and Cultural Exchange

Course Description: This course can serve as either an elective or meet the Intercultural Inquiry core requirement.  It will be offered during spring semester with travel in May and June.

The travel component of the course will include three main components:

  • Musical events and activities 
  • Visits to archaeological sites, museums, and historical points of general interest
  • Conducting everyday activities in an immersion setting

The trip will concentrate on musical experiences.  Many will be associated with Peru’s National University of Music.  Qualified students will participate in selected rehearsals, classes, workshops, and performances.  Others will observe and document their experiences.

Tentative Travel Dates:  May 24 –June 7, 2020

Estimated Cost: $2,099.00

Housing/Accommodations: Students and faculty will live in apartments in an upscale residential area of Lima.

Eligibility Requirements:  This course is intended primarily for students with a strong interest and background in music.  Students with an interest in Spanish, Art, or Latin American culture will also find it beneficial.

Registration: Students obtain the approval of Dr. Richard Williamson before registering for the course.

Payment:         $299.00 deposit – October 31st

                        $300.00 payment – November 15th

                        $400.00 payment – November 31st

                        $400.00 payment – December 10th

                        $700.00 payment – January 1st

*All payments are non-refundable. Students are not be eligible for a refund of the deposit, or any payments once submitted. Students must register for the course to attend the travel portion. Students cannot travel internationally on this program without taking the course. The travel portion is considered one credit of the three credit course.

Scholarship Eligibility:  

Because the travel fee may increase your federal financial aid eligibility, you might be able to use federal aid, including loans to help cover it.  Please speak with Financial Aid with any questions.

This course is not eligible for institutional aide, including the AU Abroad scholarship. AU Abroad courses must be approved by the Global Engagement Committee and have specially designed learning outcomes.
