The Gilman Scholarship Program is sponsored by the US Department of State and the Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs. It is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
The Gilman program offers up to $5,000 for US undergraduate students at four-year institutions to pursue study abroad. The scholarship enables students who have limited financial means to participate in study abroad opportunities worldwide.
Award recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and must use the award to defray eligible study abroad costs. To be eligible for a Gilman international scholarship, students must meet all of the following criteria:
- The applicant must be a US citizen receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at time of application or during the term of study abroad.
- The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into study abroad program eligible for credit by the student’s accredited institution of higher education within the US.
- The applicant is studying abroad for at least four weeks (28 days) in a country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least four weeks.
- The applicants are studying abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the State Department’s current travel warning list. Travel warnings are issued when the US Department of State recommends that Americans avoid travel to a country.
Application Deadlines:
For study abroad in fall or summer, the deadline is in March. For study abroad in a spring semester the deadline is in October.
