Move-In Day: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Hey Trojans! Move-In Day is one week away, and we cannot wait to welcome you with bright smiles and open arms…well, when we aren’t helping you carry mini fridges and bins upstairs, of course.

It’s been three years since my freshman move-in and I still remember all the excitement, nervousness, and the constant second-guessing of what I had packed (I overpacked). As a senior, I’ve learned a few things that can make your move-in day and your transition to college a little smoother.

Whether you’re counting the days or feeling a little anxious, here are a few tips to help you prepare.

The Day Of:

Move-In can feel like a whirlwind, so having a plan makes all the difference.

A few tips that I have found helpful:

  • Double-check your assigned move-in time and make sure you are consistently checking your email from now up to move in day
  • Plan to give yourself extra travel time in case of traffic or weather
  • Drivers should remain in the vehicle so we can keep traffic moving swiftly and safely
  • Stay fueled and hydrated, you’ll be walking and moving a lot throughout the day
  • Keep important items like your school ID, room key, phone charger, etc. in an easily accessible bag…you will need it

You will receive a welcome week schedule when you arrive. It will contain all the information you need for the week ahead!

Physical Preparation:

Packing for college doesn’t have to be overwhelming; however, there are items that can be crucial to pack.

Essentials that can often get overlooked:

  • Shower shoes and a shower caddy
  • Laundry basket and detergent
  • Surge protector power strips
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Command hooks and storage bins
  • First-aid kit and any medications
  • Emergency snacks

Don’t be stressed if anything gets overlooked! We have a Walmart and Target nearby that has anything you might have forgotten.

Extra tips:

  • Label your boxes with your name, dorm/room number and by category, so unpacking is easier.
  • Pack an overnight bag with toiletries, pajamas, and a change of clothes. You’ll thank yourself when you’re too tired to unpack everything the first night.
  • Your space will come together over the first few weeks so don’t stress about decorating your dorm perfectly on day one.

Spiritual Preparation:

Physical preparation is important, but spiritual preparedness can be the foundation you need to begin your college journey with confidence and purpose.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

God has called you to Anderson for a reason. Whether this was your top choice school, you’re an athlete, your parents are alumni, or you’re the first in your family to attend college, the Lord has placed you here at this specific time for a specific purpose.

There will be many new exciting moments, new friendships, memories, and opportunities you never expected but there will also be challenges. You may feel homesick, overwhelmed, or unsure of where you belong or fit. Through it all, remember that your identity is not found in your grades, friend group, or involvement on campus. It is found in Christ.

Lean on God in both your highs and your lows. Spend time in His words and pray often. Find a local church and get plugged into campus ministries. Allow Him to shape your heart and guide your steps throughout your time at Anderson.

God isn’t only prepping your future but transforming your current season of life. Every class, friendship, challenge, and victory is an opportunity for Him to work in your life.

So, as you pack your boxes and prepare for Move-In Day, don’t forget to prepare your heart too.

We are praying for you and cannot wait to welcome you to the Anderson family. See you soon, Trojans!
