Sankofa African American Museum on Wheels will be at the intramural gym of the Anderson University Athletic Campus on Williamston Road, Friday, February 17, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sankofa is a Ghanian term that tells us to “use the wisdom of the past to build the future.” The museum exists to educate, enlighten and empower young and old alike with living history.

An objective of Sankofa African American Museum on Wheels is to ensure that audiences gain insight and understanding of the challenges and struggles of African-Americans from slavery to the Civil Rights movement, and all the way to current issues being faced in society.

Sankofa was established in 1995 by Angela Jennings after realizing that her nephew, an honor student, knew little about the history of African-Americans. She became committed to teaching him and other young people about their unique and rich heritage. As Sankofa curator, Jennings has traveled throughout the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, West Africa and Europe to amass a collection of art, collectibles and memorabilia that rivals many traditional museums. Sankofa African American Museum is also a testament to the vast contributions African-Americans have made to the nation and the world.

Since it was established, this traveling exhibit has been seen all across much of the United States.
