The Bosch Community Fund is providing a $20,000 grant to sponsor the Anderson University Engineering Summer Institute taking place July 10-14, 2023.

The Program Director, Dr. Kayode Karunwi, along with Dr. Gilbert Eyabi, interim dean of the Anderson University College of Engineering; Ann Stoddard; and College of Engineering faculty members Dr. Ryan Karkkainen, Dr. Stephen Ojo and Dr. Chad Rodekohr will administer the program.

The Anderson University Engineering Summer Institute is a week-long day camp designed to fully introduce middle and high school students to a STEM education, with an emphasis on engineering. The goal of the camp is to increase the number of students pursuing an engineering degree, which will in turn help meet an increasing need in the Upstate for well-trained engineers in the workforce.

The camp for grades 6-12 will offer engaging hands-on activities centered around exposing middle and high school students to STEM engineering disciplines as well as fun social and recreational opportunities. With multiple projects scattered over different days, students will be able to refine their approach and understanding of the process and develop an engineer’s mindset while improving their technical communication skills.

Added to this year’s camp is a math refresher. According to Dr. Eyabi, engineering and mathematics go hand-in-hand, so the plan is to introduce students to solving engineering equations.

The following activities are planned:

  • Industry Site Visits
  • Experience life at Anderson University
  • Drone Environmental Studies and Aerobatics
  • Crash Safety
  • Trebuchet Design and Building (New)
  • 3D Engineering Design and Printing
  • Math Refreshers (New)

The Bosch grant will support the purchase of equipment and supplies for the hands-on activities that will be offered each day, as well as help with the cost of operating the program (faculty instruction, daily operating costs, etc.).

The Bosch Community Fund, the U.S.-based foundation for Bosch, has awarded over $41 million in grants to various 501(c)(3) organizations and educational institutions. The BCF focuses primarily on the enrichment of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and the advancement of environmental sustainability initiatives.
