Dr. Sam Totman offers more than 10 years of impactful ministry experience combined with a Doctor of Education, a Master of Divinity in Christian Education from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Studies from North Greenville University. His doctoral research was on the Preparedness and Self-Efficacy Perspectives of Youth Ministers Regarding Technology Integration into Ministry. He is married to Amanda and they have three children: Naomi, Lael, and Miles.

Education should shape the whole person, so I design courses that are biblically grounded, practical, reflective, and creative. I often use gamification, stories, discussion, and low-stakes challenges to help students engage the material with curiosity, build confidence, and see how their learning can serve God and others.
Anderson University is a great blend of conservative evangelical values and educational exploration. The Christian Studies department is staffed by a group of warm, passionate, and experienced ministry leaders.
I wish prospective students knew that ministry requires more than academic ability. Serious study matters, but ministry is ultimately about people: helping them know the Good News of Jesus Christ, grow in relationship with Him, and follow Him faithfully in everyday life.
I have been a guest speaker at several conferences including Conclave Youth Conference, The National Conference on Preaching, The Call to Youth Ministry Conference, and Upstate Pastors Network. I have lead several seminars and workshops on Gamification in Higher Education. I am also a co-author of Navigating Student Ministry (B&H Academic). I am also published in the D6 Family Ministry Journal.
What I find most enjoyable is watching the gradual transformation in my students as they begin the semester as novices and grow into individuals who are ready to face the challenges of ministry.
