Nathan Rackley is an adjunct professor of cybersecurity at Anderson University (SC), where he teaches Security with Linux and Cyber Threat Intelligence. He also serves as AVP & GRC Team Lead at United Community Bank, leading governance, risk, compliance, and email security. A graduate of AU’s cybersecurity program, Nathan serves on the university’s Cybersecurity Advisory Board and Alumni Board of Directors, and founded Rackley Cybersecurity Consulting LLC.

As a faculty member of the Center for Cybersecurity, I have the blessing to teach practical, hands-on cybersecurity courses that go beyond theory. In Security with Linux, students get real command-line experience, permissions, scripting, system administration, and other hands on knowledge. In Cyber Threat Intelligence, students learn how real analysts think. Students work to develop intelligence techniques, tracking threat actors, and applying frameworks used in the field. I bring my day-to-day experience leading GRC and email security at a regional bank into the classroom, so students aren’t just learning concepts, they’re seeing how a cybersecurity professional applies knowledge learned from AU.
I teach at AU because it’s where I got my start. I’m a graduate of the program myself, and I’ve always believed in the university’s mission, vision, and values. Teaching became important to me during my undergraduate journey. As President and Founder of the AU Cybersecurity Club, I had the opportunity to teach underclassmen cybersecurity competition concepts, and it was through that experience that I learned I love teaching this subject. AU is a place where I can teach what I love while also being open about how faith shapes the way I approach my work and my life. Not many institutions let you bring both of those things into the classroom at once, and that’s a big part of why I wanted to teach at AU. I also love the cybersecurity program and its faculty, and I want to give back any way I can to help continue building and growing it.
If you work hard, apply yourself, and network, while staying genuine and honest, you will go far in this field. The more opportunities you take to be curious, explore new topics, challenge yourself, and learn from your experiences, the more well-rounded you’ll become as an aspiring cybersecurity professional. Cybersecurity is not an easy discipline. It demands real effort and continuous learning, but it is incredibly rewarding and genuinely fun once you put in the work. I love that this field never provides the same day twice. It always evolves, and I love this challenge.

What I find most enjoyable is watching students learn and grow over the course of a semester. Seeing them go from unfamiliar with a topic to genuinely interested in it, and watching that curiosity develop, is incredibly rewarding. It’s especially great to see them take what they’ve learned and apply it, whether that’s in Capture the Flag competitions or other hands-on opportunities. Being able to give back to AU and invest in the next generation is something I truly love about teaching here.
