Academic Background

Nathan Cox has taught in the Dept. of Art and Design since 2002. He also serves as an Associate Provost and directs the Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence. Many of his responsibilities at AU are administrative, working behind the scenes, and collaborating with faculty from departments across the university. He loves teaching, learning, and creating. When he finds the time, he enjoys reading, watching films, sitting by fires, building with LEGO, hiking nature trails, and creating drawings, pottery, or sculptures.

Fast Facts

I’ve taught at many schools, but the communities at AU and in the Dept. of Art and Design are like no other.

The idea of a “starving artist” is a stereotype. Alumni have gone on to graduate school, become designers or art directors, become teachers or college professors, supported themselves as professional studio artists and potters, studied law, practiced as certified Art Therapists, worked in museums and galleries, started their own businesses, and more. There are so many options in creative fields, and there is a desperate need for people to be able to think creatively, communicate visually, and solve unique problems in almost every professional field.

South Carolina Independent Colleges and Schools Excellence in Teaching Award
Lifetime Fellow, The Hambidge Center for the Arts and Sciences

The opportunity to collaborate with students and colleagues, and to help students develop their intellectual and creative skills is a joy. Seeing my students succeed while studying at AU, and then continuing to excel professionally, for years after graduation, is rewarding beyond measure.
