Fast Facts
n my classes, students can expect a dynamic blend of traditional learning and hands-on experiences that bring the subject matter to life. I teach courses in microbiology, general pathology, surgical techniques, and autopsy for the Pathologists’ Assistant program. While we do incorporate PowerPoint lectures to cover key concepts, my goal is to make class as engaging as possible. I often use interactive activities and case studies to apply the material in real-world contexts, allowing students to explore complex topics in a practical and engaging way. For instance, in our surgical techniques course, we have labs where students dissect animal organs, giving them the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a tactile setting. We also use carefully crafted play-dough specimens carefully crafted to simulate real-world pathology, allowing students to manipulate and examine models to better understand structures and abnormalities. I believe that combining traditional learning methods with these hands-on experiences is essential for our niche field of study, where practical skills are just as important as theoretical knowledge. My classes aren’t just about memorizing facts—they’re about actively engaging with the material and preparing students to tackle challenges they’ll encounter in their careers as Pathologists’ Assistants.
I teach at Anderson University because it offers a unique opportunity to integrate faith, community, and academic excellence in shaping the next generation of Pathologists’ Assistants. As a small Christian liberal arts university, AU fosters an environment where students are not only trained in the technical skills of the field but are also encouraged to grow spiritually and ethically. I value being part of a close-knit community that emphasizes character development and personal growth, helping mold compassionate, skilled professionals who will make a meaningful impact in healthcare.
Within the field of Pathologists’ Assistant education, key specialties include microbiology, general pathology, surgical techniques, and autopsy. I focus on helping students develop expertise in these areas through a combination of traditional learning and hands-on experiences. In microbiology, students learn about pathogens and their role in disease, while in general pathology, we explore the mechanisms of disease and tissue changes. Surgical techniques emphasize practical skills in dissection and specimen handling. Finally, in autopsy, students gain a deep understanding of post-mortem examination, tissue collection, and interpreting findings. To ensure students are fully prepared for their careers, I also incorporate ASCP board examination preparation throughout the courses, reinforcing key concepts and practical skills. By integrating interactive case studies, lab work, and exam prep, my classes prepare students for specialized roles in pathology and autopsy.
