Happy New Year, Trojans! Each year presents a new opportunity to grow as individuals and as a community, so here are 10 campus-wide resolutions in order to start the year off right!
1. Be PRESENT
Four years seems like such a long period of time, but it really is just a small fraction of our lives. Before you know it, you have already reached the end of the journey, so it is important to make the most of each and every moment. Cherish each semester you spend on campus. Treasure all the opportunities and experiences unique to being in college. Do not waste time worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. Instead, be present for while we cannot control the future or erase the past, we can make the most of the here and now and entrust God with the rest.
2. INVEST in others
College is a time in our lives where we are seeking to be invested in by others. We each have our own goals and dreams we are striving for, and it is important that we seek out those who can and are willing to help us reach where we desire to be; however, it is just as important that we take the time to invest in those around us. Philippians 2:4 states, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (English Standard Version). Whether that means serving formally by taking on a leadership role or informally by taking the time to listen and give advice to a friend, college presents us with countless opportunities to live out the servant heart Christ calls us to.
3. Live a life of GRATITUDE
With college comes ups and downs, and sometimes the downs feel much more prevalent; however, when we take the time to pause, it becomes evident that we have so much to be grateful for even in the midst of challenges. God has done and is doing so much in our lives. Thank Him each day for His goodness. Rejoice at His providence. He is good, and that knowledge serves as our encouragement even in the toughest of seasons.
4. Choose JOY
College can be a stressful season of life from having to manage academics to extracurriculars to jobs to social life. However, we must not let the stress weigh us down and steal our joy. Nehemiah 8:10 states, “And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Each day, we are presented with the opportunity to choose joy regardless of the circumstances life throws at us. And although often difficult, when we do choose joy, that is where we find our strength.
5. Take time for YOU
In college, it is easy to feel the pressure to do everything and be everything for everyone. The desire to please can blind us to our own wants and needs. And we cannot be anything for anyone if we are not already there for ourselves. Take time to rest. Do things solely for you. Do not be dictated by what others think. Make yourself a priority this new year.
6. Take RISKS
College often places us in uncomfortable situations where we are at risk of failing, experiencing rejection, or being embarrassed. However, college is a time to learn and grow, and in order to do so, we have to risk putting ourselves out there. Doing otherwise only limits ourselves and leads to regret, and a life full of regret is ultimately a life not lived. As a result, it is vital not to let the fear of what others think prevent us from seizing opportunities. We must be willing to stretch ourselves and step out of our comfort zones as that is the only way to gain the most out of one’s college experience.
7. Be a LIGHT
Despite Anderson University being a Christian school, there is still darkness present and people who do not know the gospel. As a result, every day is an opportunity to display the light of Christ. Matthew 5:16 states, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Even the most seemingly insignificant of actions can be used to minister to others. Whether simply smiling at a person you pass by on your way to class, offering to help someone in need, or praying for a friend, let’s make our lives a living testimony this new year!
8. Pursue CHRIST
At Anderson University, we are presented with countless opportunities to grow in our relationship with God. We are constantly surrounded by people who love the Lord and desire to strengthen their faith. However, being in a Christian environment does not automatically lead to spiritual growth if one is not intentional in actively pursuing Christ. Psalm 145:18 states, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” God desires to be near to us, and if we intentionally seek Him, He will reveal Himself. Spend time in His Word. Join a local church. Attend a small group or Bible study. Pursue Him this new year, and you will find Him.
9. Dream BIG
As college students, one of the biggest questions we are asked and constantly ask of ourselves is what do we want to do with our lives. The question is scary because sometimes we have no idea. Sometimes we think the answer is concrete but find ourselves changing our mind the next year. And sometimes we know in our hearts what we want to do, but the dream seems too far-fetched and unrealistic. However, despite the uncertainty we often feel, God has a plan for each of us that is certain and fixed. Even though we might not know the answer just yet, He is working. Even though we might feel like the clock is ticking, His timing is sure. Even though the dream may seem impossible, nothing is impossible with Christ. So, seek God and allow yourself to dream big because when we align ourselves with God’s will, the sky truly is the limit!
10. CHEER ON one another
College is hard, but it is not nearly as hard when we are there to support each other. You never know what someone else is going through, so something as simple as an encouraging word can go a long way. Strive to make the people around you feel seen, loved, and supported. Pray for your community! Write notes to loved ones! Go support your friends in their pursuits whether that is a presentation, performance, or sports event. Be each other’s biggest cheerleaders this new year!
