Anderson University senior education major Justus Cox was honored as the Outstanding College Student at the Upstate Diversity Leadership Awards presented by Denny’s Corporation during ceremonies held by the Riley Institute at Furman and all of the Upstate chambers of commerce Tuesday night.

Cox has led a group at AU called Campus Connect that promotes understanding among the various cultural groups on campus and promotes diversity through education, empowerment and love. Connect works closely with Habitat for Humanity to increase community service opportunities for AU students. Connect has seen tremendous growth and support from the university administration, students and community members.

Cox, who will graduate in December, is a member of the “Call Me Mister” program, an organization providing African American males in schools with an at-risk population where positive male role models are badly needed. He volunteers many hours to work with young children, helping them with reading skills and life skills.
