I remember being so excited for my first day of class my freshman year, ready to dive into my college experience. I still get excited on the first day of class every semester. I see it as a fresh opportunity to meet new peers, professors, and topics. So, whether you’re just starting your college journey, or are starting your senior year like I am, here are some tips to start this semester right.
Find Your Classes
If you are new to campus, your Alpha Leaders should offer to help your group locate classrooms before the first day. If your Alpha Leader doesn’t, ask an upperclassman to help or walk around campus to see if you can find them on your own. Finding where each classroom is beforehand will make your first day less stressful.
Understand the Trojan Textbook Program
If you have opted into the Trojan Textbook Program, you will pick up your physical textbooks at AU Outfitters in the G. Ross Anderson, Jr. Student Center. Any online textbooks will be linked to the class’s Canvas course page. If you have any questions, go to AU Outfitters or this webpage; they will be happy to help you!
Start the Day with a Devo
Significant changes and new beginnings can cause our hearts to worry. If you are an early riser or prone to worry about the outcomes of big days, try starting the day with a devotional to ease your heart and focus your mind on God. I recommend verses like Proverbs 3:5-6, Philippians 4:6, First Samuel 12:24, or one of your favorite verses. Starting your day in the Word will guarantee you will begin the day positively!
What to Bring
You will want your technology (computer, iPad, phone) charged and ready to go, plus paper and pencils or pens. To be super prepared, fill your water bottle the night before to stay hydrated. I like to screenshot my schedule so I can remind myself the first few days what class I’m going to, when, and where it is. After your classes, get yourself a sweet little treat from Books and Beans; you deserve it!
Syllabus Day
Most classes have a “syllabus day” during the first day of class, where professors review the syllabus and explain expectations, important dates, and what the class will cover. This day is so important! Pay attention and note any important projects, exams, and dates. Preparing now will help you out later in the semester. If you have an academic adjustment, it is best to inform your professors as soon as possible so they can consider them throughout the semester.
Engage in Class
Our professors want to see you succeed, so make sure you ask them any questions you have. It may be tempting to do other things in class, like homework or look at social media (I’ve been there), but if you pay attention, your grades and professors will thank you. Taking notes on paper helps me concentrate and keeps my mind from wandering. Find what works for you and stick with it!
Pro tip: Introducing yourself and making a personal connection with your professors goes a long way. If you have time, stay a moment, say hello, and shake their hand. They will be so excited to meet you!
The first day of class can be long and full of new information, but take a deep breath; you’ll do great!
