South Carolina School of the Arts

The Department of Theatre & Dance

The show is about to start!

We work hard in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the South Carolina School of the Arts.  Everyone probably stays a little too busy— or maybe a lot too busy—but we love it!

The dance classes and voice lessons can be tough, taking notes after rehearsal requires putting aside ego, but in the end, we see significant progress and so does our audience.  During the applause, we point upwards to acknowledge our Lord after each performance, then we point to those who have been working behind the scenes in the tech booth and finally we enjoy taking a bow.  It’s a good way to do “show business!”

2026-2027 Mainstage Season

Disney’s The Little Mermaid
Music by Alan Menken
Lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater
Book by Doug Wright
Directed by Dr. David Sollish
Choreographed by Katie Stewart
Musical Direction by Jennings Thompson
Henderson Auditorium, October 1, 2, 3 at 7:30pm; October 4 at 2:00pm

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. This fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.” Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.

Steel Magnolias
By Robert Harling
Directed by Jessica Johnson
Belk Theatre, November 11, 12, 13, 14 at 7:30pm; November 14, 15 at 2:00pm

Before the iconic 1989 film broke box office records nationwide, Louisiana salon owner Truvy first set up shop on the stage. The colorful cast of regulars and employees that frequent her establishment include a mother-daughter duo planning a wedding, a woman who’s “been in a bad mood for 40 years,” and a mysterious newcomer. Through laughter, tears, and a thick fog of hairspray, these women face trials and triumphs armed with their greatest strength: each other.

Fall Dance Concert
Henderson Auditorium, November 20, 21 at 7:30pm; November 21 at 2:00pm

Fall Dance Concert is the perfect opportunity to see the creativity of our faculty, students and guest artists on display. The performance will encompass the amazing talents of our dancers for an entertaining night of live dance on stage!

Beyond the Adding Machine
Adapted and Directed by Natalie Wilson
Based on the play The Adding Machine by Elmer Rice
Belk Theatre, February 24, 25, 26, 27 at 7:30pm; February 27, 28 at 2:00pm

First staged in 1923, The Adding Machine warned that technology could make life smoother while making people expendable. Our modern adaptation updates the menace: the machine is now AI—dashboards, outsourcing, and algorithms that “know better,” shaving away jobs and sanding down creativity until only compliance remains. Told in a charged expressionist language, Beyond the Adding Machine asks what the cost is to the human soul when tasks, then choices, then imagination are outsourced and automated.

Spring Dance Concert
Henderson Auditorium, April 2, 3 at 7:30pm; April 3 at 2:00pm

Find your voice through movement. AU Dance seeks to encourage young dancers to find their voice through movement, creativity and faith. Little Women the Broadway Musical
Music by Jason Howland
Lyrics by Mindi Dickstein
Book by Allan Knee
Directed by Dr. David Sollish
Musical Direction by Dr. Seth Killen
Belk Theatre, April 21, 22, 23, 24 at 7:30pm; April 24, 25 at 2:00pm

This timeless, captivating story is brought to life in this glorious musical filled with personal discovery, heartache, hope and everlasting love. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, Little Women follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, but the publishers are not interested – her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her that she has to do better and write more from herself. Begrudgingly taking this advice, Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America.
