College of Education

Bachelor of Science (BS), Special Education: Multi-categorical

Program Overview

The Special Education: Multi-Categorical degree offers teacher candidates a hands-on approach to teaching students with mild disabilities, including Learning Disabilities (LD), Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities (EBD). You’ll receive hands-on training and learn theories, strategies, and techniques to ensure successful outcomes for students. You’ll bring your passion for serving this community and we’ll provide the tools you need to succeed in your calling. Outside of your studies, you can pursue opportunities to serve this community through the Council for Exceptional Children Club. Club members volunteer with local community organizations, like Special Olympics.

Your coursework focuses on the different individual needs of students with varying disabilities, including emotional/behavioral disabilities, learning disabilities, and intellectual disabilities. Our broad approach in your studies gives you insight into each disability. The Special Education: Multi-Categorical degree is a field study intensive program, allowing teacher candidates to gain experience with different grade levels in diverse school settings. Besides their student teaching semester, the teacher candidates spend a minimum of 100 hours in LD, EBD, and ID public school special education placements.

The benefits of a Special Education degree begin while you are obtaining your degree. Students who pursue a degree in this field are eligible for federal grant money that is applied to your annual tuition. Generally, at least part of the grant, if not all of it, will be forgiven after several years of service or if you work in a certain geographic location.

Your future truly is bright with an Anderson University Special Education: Multi-Categorical degree. School districts across the country need special education teachers and often offer a hiring bonus to candidates. Anderson University boasts a 100% hiring rate for graduates from this program. In fact, most of our teacher candidates are hired before they graduate.

The median salary for a special education teacher is $61,820, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many educators choose to obtain a master’s degree to increase earning potential.
