Human Performance

Kinesiology Program Growing, Meeting Demand in Healthcare

Walking. Writing. Pedaling a bicycle. Throwing a curve ball. The variety of human movement and activity is complex and amazing. You can find a career exploring the science of human motion while helping others reach their physical potential in our School of Human Performance.

Three Concentrations in Kinesiology

As a student in the School of Human Performance, you will earn a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and have the option to pursue one of three concentrations: athletic training, exercise specialist or pre-physical therapy.

Those in the pre-physical therapy and athletic training tracks are frequently headed to graduate school to pursue credentials in those fields. Exercise specialist is a concentration that can lead to careers from personal training and corporate wellness to cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.

Skill and Compassion

In addition to academic rigor, small class sizes and state-of-the-art facilities, you can expect us to help you weave knowledge of the field with knowledge of the Savior. The result: your growth as a health care professional who is both compassionate and skilled.

From Corporate Wellness to Physical Therapy

As society gets older, there’s a growing demand for experts to help patients recover from illness and injury. There’s also an increasing awareness of the benefits of lifetime wellness and a need for professional instruction. In addition, the science of athletic performance continues to develop, creating jobs from the lab to the playing field.

AU kinesiology grads are well-equipped to pursue careers in corporate wellness, exercise physiology, nutrition, health and wellness. You’ll also have a strong academic base to pursue a graduate degree: from a master’s degree in exercise physiology, nutrition or athletic training, to a doctorate in physical therapy or osteopathic medicine.

Advanced Coursework and Christian Influence

Many of the jobs available to kinesiology graduates involve helping others, such as injured athletes and patients. It takes a special person to handle these jobs. You need to be patient and compassionate when working with athletes, coaches, and administrators for long hours. Therefore, a person who serves in the spirit of Christ will excel in this profession.

Kinesiology majors study anatomy and physiology, physics, biomechanics, and nutrition. Anatomy and physiology help prepare our kinesiology majors to take more advanced courses, such as Orthopedic Evaluation of the Upper Body and Orthopedic Evaluation of the Lower Body, where they learn to assess and identify injuries and diseases of body joints. Other coursework teaches students about the mechanics of human movement.  Understanding how the body moves helps our students create prevention protocols and gives them the tools to help patients.

Real-World Training

Anderson also combines its coursework with job preparation—from creating cover letters and resumes to dressing profesionally and practicing business etiquette. It’s a unique feature of the program and gives students an edge when they’re job hunting. We also arrange internships. In the past, interns learned about corporate wellness at Verizon Wireless, worked in physical therapy clinics throughout the state, and created diabetes and Parkinson’s prevention programs at the YMCA.
