Reformation Day 500

October 31 is the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s launching of the Protestant Reformation, and Anderson University will celebrate that milestone with a day-long public reading of scripture involving more than 50 students and faculty.

Beginning at 9:00 am, Anderson students and faculty will gather on the CS Lewis Plaza outside the Ross Anderson Student Center and will rotate through 10-minute time slots to read aloud from selected Bible passages. The marathon, which will last until 5:00 pm, will be livestreamed online and available for viewing through Facebook Live and through the Anderson University website.

“The Protestant Reformation represented a reclaiming of the truth and power of scripture, and this event is an appropriate way for Anderson University students and faculty to celebrate this anniversary while highlighting the importance of the Bible for our university,” said Evans Whitaker, AU President.

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther made public a list of arguments – now known as the 95 Theses – arguing for a new approach to Christian faith that emphasized God’s grace. That was the first in a sequence of events that ultimately resulted in the Protestant Reformation, which involved the creation of new Christian bodies that broke away from the Roman Catholic Church.
