Sommerly Sargent, an induction teacher at Calhoun Academy of the Arts and a 2022 graduate of the Anderson University College of Education, was recently recognized as Rookie Teacher of the year.
Calhoun Academy of Arts, a Title I School in Anderson, South Carolina, exists to educate students who are college and career-ready and will positively contribute to an ever-changing world by utilizing successful teaching strategies that integrate the arts through various resources.
While she says there have been challenges in her first year, Sargent noted, “My favorite thing about my first year teaching was getting to build a strong relationship with every student in my class. This job can be very overwhelming, so it became very important to me to cling onto the things that made me happy and that was my students and the amazing people I work with.”
