The record 1,025 rising seniors participating in Palmetto Boys State on the Anderson University campus were part of another record on Thursday as they created a mile of doughnuts at the AU Athletic Campus.
Krispy Kreme executives were on hand as the boys and PBS leaders scrambled to lay more than 30,000 doughnuts end to end with each one touching the next to make their mark in The Guinness Book of World Records. The feat took just over two hours and was documented with video on the ground and in the air courtesy of a drone camera as well as news media helicopters.
Once the doughnuts were in place, a certified surveyor measured every inch of the record-making doughnut mile (5,280 feet). PBS held a doughnut mile foot race to cap off the challenge. Though the effort eclipsed the previous record of 1,841 feet by a substantial margin, the record will have to be certified by the Guinness Book officials, which could take several weeks.
This marks the 5th year since PBS selected Anderson University as its home and the 75th year of the program in South Carolina.
