Activities planned to raise awareness of eating disorders, remember former AU student

Anderson University will honor the life of Katie Bruner, a former AU student who lost her battle with an eating disorder in 2010, by hosting an Eating Disorder Awareness Week on campus the week of February 4.

The awareness week is sponsored by the Dearborn County Eating Disorder Resource Team in Bruner’s honor. The week will include several educational and inspirational events.

Katie Bruner was an Anderson student from Aurora, Indiana, who was very active in the life of AU as a student, conducting breast cancer research as an undergraduate and participating in numerous campus organizations and mission trips until her studies were interrupted by bulimia, an eating disorder.

Following her death in 2010, her parents, Mark and Paula Bruner established a foundation to educate and support other young people suffering from the disease that claimed their daughter.

  • The Body Lines display in the Gallant gallery of the Rainey Fine Arts Center will showcase the way perception of physical beauty has changed over time.
  • There will be an information table in the dining hall during lunch and chances to enter a drawing.
  • Fundraiser: Handmade awareness bracelets will be sold for $1.

Monday, February 4, 10:10 a.m. in Daniel Recital Hall
Event focused on athletes and healthy eating: A nutritionist will be on campus to present important information and warning signs that someone may be working out too much.

Tuesday, February 5, (time TBA) in Watkins breezeway
The AU Health Center staff will host a What’s on Your Plate? Gab and Grab table focused on the My Plate government health guidelines.

Wednesday, February 6, 10:10 a.m. in Henderson Auditorium
Campus Worship will feature a slide show of Katie’s life, and the speaker, Amena Brown, will talk about finding our identity in Christ.

Wednesday, February 6, 7:30 p.m. in Merritt Theatre
Caitlin Boyle, author of Healthy Tipping Point and Operation Beautiful will be presenting; a reception and book signing will follow.
