Fast Facts

I enjoy the daily interaction with AU students. They are sharp and committed young people and I love the energy and vitality they bring to class. I have a passion for teaching the next generation of professional communicators and have a calling to help ethical young people with a Christian worldview find their places in communication-related fields.

There’s a tremendous need for ethical and professional communicators. Nearly every organization from small nonprofits to large corporations are eager to hire people who communicate well orally and in writing, who can work well in teams, and who are problem solvers. That’s exactly what we strive to teach in the Communication major. Additionally, there are many niches within the discipline so whether you are interested in writing, video production, social media content development or any other aspect of professional communication, there’s a place for you in the workforce.

I was named Educator of the Year by the South Carolina Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America in 2020 and received the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013.

My student groups have have received many awards through the South Carolina Public Relations Society of America since 2019.

I began my career in journalism, working first as a reporter covering law enforcement, courts, and county government and later working as the editor and general manager of a weekly newspaper, during which time I won multiple award through the South Carolina Press Association.

Later, I worked as the communication director for three major nonprofits, where I also garnered multiple awards through the Baptist Communicators Association and the Southern Baptist Child Care Development and Public Relations Group.

I’ve also served in leadership roles for various professional organizations, including as the chapter president of the Bluegrass chapter of the Public Relations Society of America in Louisville, Kentucky, and in various board positions for the South Carolina chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

I enjoy the daily interaction with the students. I especially enjoy providing academic advising which allows me to get to know students individually and work to help them achieve their educational goals.

I am accredited in public relations by the Public Relations Society of America and have more than 25 years experience working in public relations, primarily with nonprofit organizations. Specialities include organization communications, public relations, media relations, employee communications, community relations, and writing.
