How would you describe your classes to someone who has never attended one?

My clinicals involve entering a psychiatric hospital environment to learn to care for some of society's most vulnerable adults. Many of these people no longer have a healthy support system and home to return to. Learning to care for these adults and helping them find new skills to live well is very fulfilling career. This is an opportunity to meet interesting people, learn their stories, and follow their progress. You will be pleasantly surprised by your experience. Whether you choose to work in mental health or not, you will encounter mental illness in every other nursing discipline. These skills will help you offer extraordinary care to all your patients.

I love mental health nursing and have been a mental health advocate since 2001. I also received my first associate degree from a Christian college. My fond memories of the great instructors, mentors, and friends during those years are some of the sweetest memories of my life. The sphere of influence they had on many of my life decisions also influenced my desire to teach in a Christian university when this opportunity arose. Nursing is a calling that I truly believe closely models a walk with Christ in many ways. Nursing teaches us to check ourselves at the door and treat all people the same, and to learn to discern what is the best course of action in every situation. This is in direct correlation with biblical principles and following Christ’s examples of compassion and love. My hope is to mentor new nurses to recognize these same principles and help them be wonderful nurses and patient advocates as well.

Nursing is one of the most rigorous college study programs in any setting. You will sacrifice many things in order to be successful in nursing school. But this is a short span of time over the course of your life. Committing yourself fully to your nursing education now will pay big dividends in the future. Don’t spread yourself too thin and end up doing half the job required to become a successful nurse. Delayed gratification will be so much sweeter with RN behind your name. We are all here to help you succeed and fulfill your dreams.

I enjoy public speaking if it involves advocating for mental health. My nursing classmates recognized this passion and asked me to speak at our pinning ceremony. This was a great honor for me.

I don’t really feel like I am working everyday because I love being a nurse, mental health advocate, student mentor, and living my Christian faith uninhibited by political and societal standards.
