Kinesiology – Exercise Specialist

Essential Preparation

Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement. It’s often used as an umbrella term to describe the interrelationship between the physiological processes and anatomy of the human body. It is a great field of study if you’re interested in learning what the human body is capable of, how you can assist in increasing its performance, and help prevent injuries for patients or clients. If you study kinesiology at AU and are interested in helping people achieve a higher quality of life or performance goals, choosing the Exercise Specialist concentration may be the perfect fit.

Exercise Specialist

An Exercise Specialist is interested in personal health and fitness and wants to empower others to learn, practice, and live out a healthier lifestyle. As an Exercise Specialist you use research-based techniques to help people of all fitness levels reach their personal fitness goals. Exercise Specialists are also fitness professionals who develop and implement personalized exercise programs for individuals across a diverse set of health and fitness backgrounds, from professional athletes to individuals only recently cleared to exercise.

To Become a Major

Before students can take on the advanced courses in kinesiology, they must earn a 2.5 GPA in three courses: Introduction to Cell Biology, College Trigonometry, and General Chemistry. After passing these courses, they can progress in the major and choose a concentration, such as Exercise Specialist.
You’ll exceed in this field by developing excellent communication skills, a sound knowledge and understanding of body mechanics, and gaining competence in prescribing and guiding exercise and rehabilitation protocols.

Advanced Coursework and Christian Influence

Our faculty fosters compassion and knowledge, helping students to succeed not just in their professional fields, but in their personal lives. It takes a special person to be an Exercise Specialist. You need to be patient and compassionate when working with athletes, coaches, and administrators for long hours. Therefore, a person who serves in the spirit of Christ will excel in this profession.

Your coursework will include Essentials of Strength and Conditioning, Exercise Diagnosis and Prescription, Kinesiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Sports Psychology, Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, and Applied Exercise Physiology.

Your Future

With this degree you can work in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation facilities, universities, cooperate wellness programming, community or public fitness centers, and local health clubs or gyms. Your positions can range from a flexible, freelance schedule to full-time work. Additionally, the potential titles you earn can vary from Rehabilitation Specialist to Wellness Director.
