After our unexpected hiatus over the past week, I had a startling realization last night: midterm exams are just around the corner. A wave of panic hit me, but after that brief moment when many chaotic thoughts raced through my mind, I grabbed my laptop and started studying right there in my room.
Having gone through this frantic routine more times than I’d like to admit, I’ve noticed that I prefer certain places to ‘lock in’ and focus. So, what better way to organize my thoughts than by ranking those spots?
First on the list: my dorm. It may be mundane, but it’s the most convenient place for me to work since I can dive right in when the fervor strikes me. I also have complete control over my environment—whether it’s adjusting the lighting, setting the perfect noise level, or playing background music—I can customize the space to my exact liking to help maximize my productivity. However, it’s easy to get distracted in my dorm since there are no clear boundaries between work and rest: association is essential.
Next on my list is the library, which has many great spots to find a nook and lock in. The quiet atmosphere of the library helps me stay on task, and seeing everyone else hard at work kinda oddly motivates me. The library also has many study rooms, perfect for group sessions with classmates. They come equipped with whiteboards and are easy to reserve ahead of time, making them a huge plus. Also, having access to printers and nicer computers is huge.
Common House is next! Aside from having one of the most aesthetic atmospheres I’ve ever studied in, Common House in downtown Anderson has excellent coffee and pastries, making it my favorite off-campus place to study. A bit of a side tangent here, but they currently have a seasonal drink menu, and the Pumpkin Dirty Chai latte is mind-blowing. Trust me.
Also located in downtown Anderson is Carolina Wren Park. There’s been times where I’m looking to get some sun and quiet, and this is my go-to place. Couple this beautiful spot with Groucho’s Deli right across the street, and you’ve got yourself a perfect combo for a lunch + study afternoon!
Last but not least is our on-campus coffee shop, Books & Beans. Coffee! Pretty self-explanatory. Coffee is good. The lively, noise-friendly atmosphere is excellent for casual group study sessions, especially when I need to practice a presentation or go over flashcards with friends.
Who knows? Maybe you’ll see me at one of these locations soon, hunched over my laptop as I feverishly cram for my next big project. Feel free to pull up a chair and join me in my procrastinated efforts as we prepare for our midterms.
