Educational Philosophy

The College of Education, referred to as the “unit,” focuses on the intellectual development of the student, while being attentive to the ideals of character, servant leadership, and cultural engagement. A holistic Christian approach also requires the college to give attention to other aspects of the student’s total development by providing opportunities for physical, social, and spiritual growth.

The College of Education is committed to the candidates’ intellectual growth, including the acquisition of a broad understanding of the major areas of knowledge, which enables the teacher to interpret the world and his or her place in it. Physical growth means the continued development of the bodily self, which necessarily includes life-style considerations. Social growth includes the continued development of a sense of identity and interpersonal relationships often sought in the forms of friendship, leadership, and love. Finally, spiritual growth focuses on providing an educational context in which Christ is recognized as the Source of all truth and the self-expression of God.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the College of Education is to endow candidates with knowledge and skills in the context of a faith-based environment that focuses on the development of character, servant leadership, and cultural engagement such as to be prepared to effectively impact the learning of all students. Within this framework, the College of Education strives to develop “educators who are builders of knowledge, values, and community.”

Unit Vision

In keeping with the vision of Anderson University, the College of Education seeks to produce Christian educators who are characterized by a commitment to learning and service and are dedicated to inspire these values in their own classrooms of learners.

Unit Mission Statement

The mission of the College of Education is to prepare men and women to become Christ-centered “educators who are builders of knowledge, values, and community” by nurturing the development of character, servant leadership, and cultural engagement.
