If you are concerned about a student’s suicide potential, follow the protocol below:

Ask the student if he/she has considered self-harm or suicide.

Yes: Explain to the student you must call the Counseling Center and WALK THE PERSON TO THE COUNSELING CENTER IMMEDIATELY! If the person leaves the room or refuses to go, contact Campus Safety at ext. 2060 and the Counseling Center at 662-6078.

Vague Response: Ask the following questions:

Do you have a plan (when, where, method) for actively harming yourself?

Have you ever attempted suicide before?

No: Remind the student that Anderson University provides free Counseling Services to students and that a counselor is available to students on campus and is a great place to ‘dump’ their concerns. Encourage the individual to make an appointment to see the counselor as soon as possible before things get worse.

You do not need to be afraid to ask these questions. For anyone considering suicide, these questions will not furnish them with new ideas. Most people who are actively suicidal are willing to answer these questions. ANYONE who makes reference to suicide should be referred to the Counseling Center, even if the individual seems to only be seeking attention.

All threats of suicide should be taken seriously!

The more specific and lethal the plan, and a history of previous suicide attempts, indicates a greater risk of suicide.

Call the Counseling Center (864-622-6078) in the presence of the student

and walk with the student to the Counseling Center.

If after hours, contact Campus Safety at ext. 2060.
