Nathan J. Cox

Nathan realized he wanted to teach college-level art courses when he was still an undergraduate student. He paid his way through college through financial aid and summer jobs. “I shingled houses, worked nights in a factory, taught at a summer camp, was a field hand at a produce company, and worked on a Christmas tree farm.”
During and after graduate school, he also taught in part-time and temporary positions while looking for a permanent job. “There are many, many career paths in the arts. Don’t be afraid to follow your heart.”

Why teach at AU?
The faculty in the Department of Art and Design comprise an amazing creative team that is unlike any I have ever had the privilege to be a part of. Similarly, working with our students is also incredibly rewarding. They challenge and surprise me all the time, and their hard work is inspiring.

Notable achievements outside of discipline

Have exhibited my artwork in more than 80 juried or invitational solo or group exhibitions.
How would you describe your classes to someone who has never attended one?
The classes I teach in the Foundations program (first year art and design classes) are unique in many ways. They are team-taught, so students actually have several faculty members in one class, and we all have different areas of expertise.
