Wireless Networking at Anderson University
There are a number of wireless networks available at Anderson University. Which network you decide to access depends upon your location and needs. Some can be accessed very easily but are not encrypted and secured, while others will require some setup steps but are both encrypted and secure.
Every wireless network advertises itself via something called its SSID, which is the name that appears in your list of available wireless networks on your computer. The way by which you retrieve this list can vary depending upon the Operating System (OS) you use, such as Windows XP, Windows 7 or 8, or Mac OS. Also, various PC and laptop manufacturers have decided to add their own software to control wireless access, which can complicate making a connection. This is a publicly accessible non-secure network available in a number of public areas around the campus such as the Thrift Library. No special setup is required, and it does not require a login. It works much the same way as public access in many places. It is designed for guests at the University and for those who do not want to perform special setup procedures. It is, however, limited in bandwidth and in access to some university resources. It is not the best choice for students, faculty, and staff.

This is a secure encrypted high-bandwidth network available to student iPad users at AU. It requires a setup for security, but AU issued iPads come with this network pre-configured. It is the best choice for classroom access when using iPads. This is a secure encrypted high-bandwidth network available to resident students for gaming console use only. It requires a setup for security. You may contact the Anderson University IT Dept. for setup details if you wish to have access, and you will be issued a password.
An 802.11b ,802.11g, or 802.11n Wi-Fi Compliant wireless network adapter (built-in or add-on).
Laptops - Most laptops (PC or Mac) come standard with an integrated wireless network adapter. If not, we recommend USB wireless network adapters.
Desktop PC's - We strongly recommend USB wireless network adapters rather than interface cards.
Mac - A Wi-Fi AirPort network adapter is needed to access the internet.
Student Email Accounts
All students are assigned an Anderson University Email Account. Students may access their email accounts via web browser by going to https://mail.andersonuniversity.edu/owa . A username and password are required. The general form for a user login requires the use of the prefix "acnt\" before the username. For example, user jsmith would use the form acnt\jsmith to log in to the mail server.
Your Anderson University Email Account is the primary means the University faculty and staff uses to contact you about university-related matters. It is vital that you check it often.
Because mail storage space is at a premium, student mailboxes are limited to 50 Mbytes total storage space, though there is no limit on the size of an individual item of mail that does not exceed the total space available to you. (Please note: attachments that are considered executable files - .exe or .com files, for example - are not permitted due to the threat of computer viruses.)
Additionally, once per week the mail system looks at your Inbox for mail that is 30 days old or older and automatically deletes it. This prevents you from inadvertently missing important new events because older ones have clogged your Inbox. If you wish to retain items longer than 30 days, create a new mail folder and move the items into the new box. Only your Inbox is scanned for old items; your other folders are left alone.
If you are notified that you are out of mailbox space, you will need to delete some mail. Please be aware that students often miss the Drafts folder, where draft copies of mail can sometimes be stored inadvertently. Check this folder and your Deleted Items folder to be sure they are empty before deleting other mail, or calling the IT Department.
If you are uncertain what your Anderson University username is, go to https://aunet.andersonuniversity.edu/iqwebaccount and fill in the information there. This will provide you with your username. Passwords cannot be provided by the Anderson University IT Department. You may, if necessary, contact IT to change a password, but you must be prepared to present positive proof of identity.
Student Email Accounts are retained even after you leave Anderson University, provided that you access it at least once each year. Each summer, mailboxes that have not been accessed within the past year will be deleted.
Alumni may request that a mailbox be created or retained at any time by contacting the IT Department at email@example.com or 864-231-2457.
Printing in the Anderson University Computer Labs
All Anderson University students are allowed to print up to 500 pages per year at no charge in any of the four main computer labs: Bunton, Watkins, CIS, and Vandiver.
When you attempt to print documents in these labs, a popup window will appear requiring your username and password. Each page printed will be added to your total unless you cancel the print job. When your account gets low, the popup window will warn you.
If you need to purchase additional pages, you may do so at Anderson Central at a cost of $0.05 each.
Printing in the Residence Halls
Wireless printers do not typically work when in a large network environment like the University's. They lack the capability to supply the necessary login credentials. Even if you could get them to connect, since all residential students are on the same network, your printer would be available to anyone on that network.
If you wish to have a personal printer, please be sure that you can access it via a USB cable rather than wirelessly.
IT Department Assistance
The Anderson University IT Department staff can assist you with questions about and with difficulties you may have connecting to our network, SelfService and/or Canvas issues, email account issues, and general questions about computing resources at the university.
Due to the large number of manufacturers and wide variety of computers, we cannot assist with hardware or operating system issues, especially since doing so can in many cases void warranties.
Anderson University provides the current version of Microsoft Office for both PC and Mac via a Microsoft Office 365 subscription. This license allows students access to the current Microsoft Office suite at no charge during the time they are enrolled at Anderson University.
