How would you describe your classes to someone who has never attended one?

Fun and funny, yet serious, guided by knowledge and a passion to give students what will really help them as performers and communicators, with a lot of interaction and feedback; engaging, with a mutual understanding that we are on this pathway together and an understood assumption that we do not want any casualties: everyone is important, everyone is responsible for learning, and together we will build bridges to knowledge; prior knowledge or lack of knowledge should not be an impediment, as we will strive to create pathways to a mastery of concepts that matter. Hopefully I can communicate both the larger context of learning and the value of music theory to the students as practicing musicians and performers.

AU is a local Christian university that aspires to excellence in its academic curricula and accompanying courses and that also highly values its bold testimony of the power of God to change lives through regeneration that comes from hearing the gospel and receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

The fluent understanding of music theory can empower performing musicians, informing their performance in tangible ways. It illuminates details along the pathways of performance and thus is liberating in that it can suggest a range of interpretive options.
