Academic Background

After graduating from UofSC in 2002, I started a career in music publishing. I worked for five years as Keyboard Managing Editor for The FJH Music Publishing Company and then for almost ten years as Production Editor for Faber Piano Adventures. During this time, I co-edited and translated the Spanish edition of the Piano Adventures method and contributed with the editing and workshops of both domestic and international editions. I also have extensive experience as Church Music Director and have kept a full private studio in Anderson since 2005, where I teach students of all ages.

Teaching at AU

What year did you start teacing at AU?

2017

How would you describe your classes to someone who has never attended one?

While I am a classically trained pianist, I believe that curriculums should be flexible and customized to the students as much as possible. Therefore, we explore many different genres and place an emphasis on sightreading, creativity, and the enjoyment of making music and teaching together. Readings, discussions, and practical projects that will prepare you for the realities of successful studio teaching and the use of the instrument in your field are my primary concern.

Studio and advanced pedagogy, pedagogy literature, applied piano, and class piano

I feel a deep calling to teach and to share my passion for music as a vehicle for the development of creativity, artistry, and self-expression. I believe that through music we can touch and influence the lives of those around us. AU’s core values and culture provide a nurturing place to grow spiritually and in faith, while offering a dedicated and competitive academic setting where we can all continue our journey towards self improvement.

I met my husband of twenty years, Ward Bowen, during our studies at UofSC. He is a composer and has worked alongside me in publishing from the beginning. Together we have published six books on piano literature and pedagogy: Introducing Etudes for Building Piano Technique Books 1-3, and a series on Introducing the Composers: Introducing Beethoven His Life and Piano Literature, Introducing Mozart, and Introducing Bach. I also edited dozens of FJH and Piano Adventures publications during my time with the companies. You can tour our publications, read our blog, and learn more about my teaching at www.pianoforteachers.com.
