About Art & Design

Mentorship & Creative Problem Solving

As an art student here, you’ll be mentored by caring, skillful professors and hone your ability to solve visual and conceptual problems. We offer a Bachelor of Arts in Art degree with concentrations in art education, ceramics, graphic design, and painting and drawing. In all of the concentrations, you’ll learn to become a creative problem solver—a crucial skill for visual artists, but also a highly valued and transferable skill in other fields, including business, administration, and leadership.

Foundations

The honing of your problem solving begins your freshman year in our Foundations program, in which you study the fundamentals of art and design. In addition to developing your skills in observational drawing, color theory and 2D and 3D design, our team-taught foundation classes will push you to communicate ideas as well as visual information.

First-class Art Education, Attentive Faculty, Intimate Setting

Accredited by NASAD, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, our program offers you a rigorous art education without making you move to a big city for college. You’ll also benefit from the attentiveness and support of your professors who want to see you excel in both art and life and have a decades-long track record of doing just that. Our graphic design students consistently win many of the regional student ADDY awards, and in 2012, Anderson students won two of the 25 national student ADDY gold awards and one of the 41 silver awards.

Sought-after, Competitive Graduates

The quality of our art ed grads inspires school principals to pursue them for job openings. Upon graduating from the South Carolina School of the Arts, you’re prepared to compete for graphic design positions at firms and agencies, entry into Master of Fine Arts programs and openings in art education. In addition to working as studio artists, designers, and art educators, our grads have forged careers in art therapy and arts management.
