Why teach at AU?

I feel that teaching in Christian higher education is a special calling, especially for someone in the biological sciences. I am grateful for the ability to teach students about some of the many areas where science and faith intersect, so that I can help students grow their faith alongside their intellect. Being able to teach human anatomy and physiology in a faith-based setting allows me much more freedom than I would have in a setting where I was not encouraged to speak of my faith. It is this setting where I belong and feel I can make the biggest difference in the lives of students. I have always felt supported by both my colleagues and superiors at AU. I fully enjoy the camaraderie that is ever present in the hallways and along the sidewalks of campus. I am grateful for the opportunity to worship while at work and feel that the general AU community is an extension of my own family.

Hobbies

Playing with my children, distance running, swimming, gymnastics, going to the movies

Former level 10 gymnast; completed my first full marathon in November 2014

am a licensed physical therapist

What I wish prospectives students knew about my discipline or careers in my discipline.

I wish that prospective students knew how important it is to learn material not for a test but in order to gain a complete understanding of a subject. My discipline is full of problem solving, and developing a technique for solving problems is perhaps the most important milestone to achieve. I also wish for prospective students to realize the value of "being educated" in the general sense, which goes far beyond learning within a specific discipline.

How would you describe your classes to someone who has never attended one?

My classes are challenging, but only within the context of a supportive environment where students should feel free to interact and ask questions.
