Summer Repertory Theatre

~mentoring young theatre artists of great character and spirit~

For the past seven years, Theatre majors in The South Carolina School of the Arts have joined forces with area high school actors to share theatre with the community through the Summer Repertory Theatre. Local high school actors participate in a three-week long workshop that culminates with the staging of two plays. The "AU Rep" as it is called, is part of the larger "Anderson Theatre Festival."

Last year more than twenty area high school students mentored by six AU Theatre majors worked to produce  Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night  and Kipling’s always exciting Jungle Book in rolling repertory.   This year the season includes the Bard’s Julius Caesar and a fast-paced version of Around the World in 80 Days based on the novel by Jules Vern.  The workshop, which is heavily subsidized by Anderson University, is inexpensive and offers an hour of college credit.  Past productions have included The TempestAlice and A Midsummer Night’s Dream among others.

Shakespeare’s tale of murderous intrigue finds new life as it tears a page from a famous modern novel. The story makes us deliberate the limits of loyalty, the importance of structure and the value of friendship. Ideals that are classic, maybe, but always relevant. We hope you hear the powerful words afresh!

This royalty-free play is part of a fantastic collection of plays for kids and teens on Drama Notebook:
