Howard believes the application of a music degree is “much more malleable” than one might expect. “While the traditional avenues of performing and teaching are still viable, different music-related careers are possible even though the degree may not be focused in those areas.”

He enjoys the collegiality between faculty, the freedom to explore musical and academic pursuits, and, especially, AU’s students. “They are highly motivated with a big desire to learn and challenge themselves.”

Why teach at AU?

When I was an undergraduate student at a big university and a young Christian, I was saddened by the fact that in such a large, prestigious school, there were only a couple of Christian professors. I wanted to become an influence to college-aged people, inspiring and encouraging them to grow in their academic pursuits while developing their faith.

Am traditionally trained as a concert pianist, but I have performed in classical, jazz, pop, country, gospel, Broadway, and rock genres.

How would you describe your classes to someone who has never attended one?

I love student interaction during classes, so discussions and presentations are lively and fun.
