The Jazz Ensemble is a 13-member group that’s open to all students. Coached by studio and Hollywood saxophonist Doug Norwine, students in the group perform Dixieland, Big Band music, and bebop as well as ragtime, blues, funk, and R&B.

As an elite group of musicians, the Jazz Ensemble performs four to six times per year for on- and off-campus events and with some of AU’s choral groups. The ensemble is composed of saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, flute and vibraphone. Its repertoire includes tunes by The Brecker Brothers, Miles Davis, Henry Mancini and David Sanborn, as well as other well-known pieces such as “Take the 'A' Train” by Duke Ellington.

The Jazz Ensemble practices for 90 minutes every Wednesday and for approximately two and a half hours on alternating Tuesday evenings, during which time students benefit from Norwine’s mentorship and three decades of experience. Scholarships are available.

Entry into the Jazz Ensemble is by audition only. If you’re interested joining the Jazz Ensemble, contact Assistant Professor of Music Doug Norwine at
