Music Audition Requirements

An audition is required for all students interested in enrolling as a music major in the South Carolina School of the Arts. Upon submitting an Anderson University application, students are able to register for any available audition dates. All audition questions can be directed to Stephanie Dentino at sdentino@andersonuniversity.edu.

Upon arrival, all prospective music majors must have:

  • Two letters of recommendation from a music teacher or worship leader who is familiar with you and your skills.
  • Essay (no more than 500 words) answering the following questions:
    • What are the main reasons you want to attend Anderson University and the South Carolina School of the Arts?
    • Based on your skills, abilities, and personal qualities, what do you think you can contribute to the music department at the South Carolina School of the Arts?
    • What are your most important educational and career goals within the next five years? What are your long-term goals?

Based on your intended major, audition requirements are as follows:

  • B.M. Vocal Performance and B.M.E. Music Education (Vocal/Choral)
  • Prepare and fully memorize two contrasting pieces – one selection from classical vocal literature and one in the style of your choice. An accompanist will be provided.
  • Be prepared to sight read and sight sing simple rhythms and melodies.
  • Be prepared to complete a test of vocal range, vocal quality, and tonal memory.
  • You will be asked to complete a Theory Placement test. This assessment does not factor into admission into the department. Rather, it is used to properly place students in theory classes should they decide to attend.

B.M. Instrumental Performance, B.M. Piano Performance, B.M. Piano Performance and Pedagogy, B.M.E. Music Education (Instrumental)

  • Prepare two contrasting pieces from standard repertory on your primary instrument
  • Be prepared to sight read simple rhythms.
  • Know appropriate scales and arpeggios for your instrument.
  • You will be asked to complete a Theory Placement test. This assessment does not factor into admission into the department. Rather, it is used to properly place students in theory classes should they decide to attend.

B.M. Commercial Music and B.M. Worship Leadership (Vocal)Prepare and fully memorize two contrasting pieces. An accompanist will be provided.

  • Worship Leadership students must choose at least one hymn or sacred song
  • Be prepared to sight read and sight sing simple rhythms and melodies.
  • Be prepared to complete a test of vocal range, vocal quality, and tonal memory.
